Inspired by the colourful patterns of 17th century Dutch whalers’ hats, Polly Apfelbaum made custom wool hats for each artist of the Biennial in her Mutts and Mugs: Chicken Little was Right! The Sky Is Falling installation.

Polly Apfelbaum

Polly Apfelbaum was born in 1955. She has lived and worked in New York City since 1978, the year she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Her works have been featured in solo exhibitions at the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, and the Institute for Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, PA. Apfelbaum is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Scholarship and the Rome Prize, awarded by the American Academy in Rome. Her works can be viewed in collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris in Paris, France, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.
