Beginning February 17, the Art of Joy will be spreading throughout the city!

Quebec City, February 15, 2017—The 8th Manif d’art– The Quebec City Biennial, produced in collaboration with the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ), will open on Friday, February 17, 2017. The MNBAQ, along with several galleries, libraries, theatres, streets and even shop windows will display a multitude of exclusive works—created under the banner of The Art of Joy—in a series of interrelated exhibitions! Altogether, over 50 artists from 9 countries will present the fruits of their labours at nearly 30 sites throughout the city, from February 17 to May 14, 2017.

To attend Manif d’art 8, all you need is a Pin priced at $15 ($10 for students and free for children under 12), available at numerous outlets throughout the city, including the offices of Manif d’art, MNBAQ, LA CHAMBRE BLANCHE, and Œil de Poisson, among many other sites. See all outlets

To launch the Biennial, a week-end vernissage has been planned and is open to the public from February 17 to 19. Free shuttle buses will take you from one site to another to cover the event’s extensive program. And to help you take full advantage of everything the Biennial has to offer over the next few months, five itineraries have been mapped out for you. A vast program of activities is also offered: special events, workshops, meetings and guided tours. Children have not been left out, as a special section is devoted to them: La P’tite Manif, featuring activities and exhibitions designed for children and their families.

Joy at the heart of the Biennial

“Today more than ever, joy is a battle, a weapon to protect ourselves from devastating events. Here in Quebec City, for three months, the exhibited works will affirm this notion of joy. Jubilant, troubling, radiant, amusing, caustic and poetic—all will embody this force, since the essence of art is joy.” These words, spoken by the event’s curator Alexia Fabre several months ago with regard to theme of The Art of Joy, take on even more significance in today’s Quebec, reminding us how art can serve as a catalyst and balm in times of uncertainty or upheaval.

The central exhibition in an architectural jewel

For the first time in the history of the Biennial, the central exhibition will unfold in an institutional setting. Manif d’art 8 will grace the four temporary exhibition galleries of the Pierre Lassonde Pavilion of the MNBAQ, an international jewel of international standing, making the Biennial even more alluring!
