American performance artist and inventor Mark Pauline is well known as the founder-director of Survival Research Labs [SRL]. Since its inception in 1978, SRL has operated as an organization of creative technicians dedicated to re-directing the techniques, tools and tenets of industry, science and the military away from their typical manifestations in practicality, product or warfare. SRL has staged more than 50 mechanized presentations in the United States and Europe. In the field of robotics and mechanics, the complexity of action and movement displayed by Mark Pauline’s machines are unique. While in Québec City, Mark Pauline will hold a conférence to talk about his approach and present works that have established SRL’s reputation as a pioneer of industrial performance. He will also discuss current projects and give advice to those interested in successfully completing projects that border the impossible. Mark Pauline’s talk will be supported by documentation of actions and performances with his machines, robots and other devices and effects, most of which are simply spectacular. He will also discuss the political aspect of his practice and the ritual and satire underlying the work at Survival Research Labs. Mark Pauline, activist and engaged artist, is also a highly engaging speaker.
