COURTESY OF THE ARTIST
Maryam Jafri was born in Karachi in 1972, Pakistan and lives in Copenhagen, Denmark and New York. Her videos, installations, and collages often focus on the role of language and memory in the construc- tion of identities. In her video work, this investigation often relies on a visual language poised between film and theatre, and narrative experiments that oscillate between script and document. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in Europe, North America, and Asia, including solo shows at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Kunsthalle Helsinki, and The Malmö Art Museum. Recent group shows include The Renaissance Society in Chicago; the 1st Thessaloniki Biennale; Contour, the 4th Biennial for Video Art in Mechelen, Belgium; and The Kitchen in New York.
