Art is supposed to be free. Or freestyle. Or style free. So says Alexandre Lemay, whose work is
obviously influenced by graffiti, in which deliberation is not a tool of the trade and in which movement
and colour determine composition. Which means that spontaneity reigns; spontaneity that can be put
on hold. Which is even better: let colours simmer, let composition take on its own life, let intervals allow
the painting to dictate its own terms. It’s the theory of havoc.

The painting is built in layers, through the
successive application of paint, graphite, oil pastel. Lemay sows traces of the thoughts and inspirations
that influence his unbridled imagination in a method akin to automatic writing. Often scribbled, enveloped
by matter, they become undecipherable, yet participate in the paintings’ symbolic and material development.
Lemay allows himself to be inspired by Jose Parla, whose calligraphic delirium is pushed to the
limit. Lemay works on what he can find and with what he has on hand. Not for ecological reasons,
simply because it’s easier, cheaper and faster. Take what you can: salvaged canvases, recycled supports,
leftover paint, whatever. What’s important is creation. It confers nobility to a painting, no matter what
it’s made of.
